Fly high on holiday with model aircraft
Many advantages for model aircraft pilots including perfect thermals
Those dreaming of model flying in the mountains have made the right choice with us. Thermal flight enthusiasts can experience unrestricted enjoyment at any time of the day at the Hotel Post. Various hillside flight terrains, reserved exclusively for you, offer fantastic conditions from spring until late autumn. Model flying on holiday is pure fascination.
Model airfield
The pièce de résistance of our model flying meeting point is the nearby model airfield for spectacular moves and unlimited freedom. The area is part of the Nauders Model Club. It is situated on a beautiful western slope and is only 1.5 km away from our Hotel Post. This can be easily reached by car. Good thermal conditions can be enjoyed here from around 1 PM. A stronger breeze also allows for larger models. Slope flying can be experienced in its most purest form for both beginners as well as professionals here. All pilots meet at the Hotel Post after an exciting flying session for crafts and repairs in our well-equipped model designer room.
PARDITSCHHOF
Another flying opportunity is available directly at the Parditschhof at 1,650 m with a great view of our village of Nauders, extending to the Ortler and the Engadin.
The Parditschhof is accessible by car for model aircraft pilots. A catered farm with a large landing field right next door offers ideal flying conditions with southerly to westerly winds! A fee of €5.00 per person per day applies.
NOVELLESHOF
It is possible as well to fly at the Novelleshof on 1694m. Only pilots are allowed to drive up there by car. After leaving the car by the parking area you need to follow the path for another 15 minutes to get to the airfield just behind the farm. The field is quite small and only skilled pilots can fly here. The best winds are South to North. According to prior agreement the field is used by Peter and his son Daniel. Enjoy a beautiful mountain backdrop.
RIATSCHHOF
The model-flying area at the Riatschhof is on 1.520m and opposite the bergkastel valley station with a pretty view of the mountains. There are really two neighbored farms that can be reached easily by car on a paved mountain road. The Riatschhof is also a restaurant that happily invites you in for lunch or a cold drink on their nice sun terrace.
About 30 m from the carpark on a small pulpit just off the farm is the take-off area. Flying is possible With northerly-, easterly- and southerly winds. It is possible to land right on the pulpit again or on the fields below. In case you didn't enjoy lunch at the Riatschhof you might want to end the day of flying with a little snack there.
PLAMORT
The elevated plain "Plamort" is on 2100 m and is part of the border area between Austria and Italy. Up to the dammed pool you can make use of the shuttel service provided by the lift operator (advance reservation is needed). To get to the launch site you need to follow a nice and even hiking trail for about 20 minutes. One highlight will be the most impressive mountain panorama with breathtaking views of the Reschenlake, the Haiderlake, all the way to the Ortler. Bigger models can be flown here easily due to its rocky, steep southerly slope that covers about 400 meters in altitude difference above Reschen. When the sun touches the slope, the thermal lift will be great. The landing area is free of rocks but a little tilted. You can either land your plane-model with the wind, nose pointing up or from lee pointing down. Southerly or westerly winds are necessary though. The area is not only used for model-flying but also for hiking or biking. The antitank barrier from the 2. World War and the old bunkers are worth seeing.
BERGKASTEL
The hiking and Skiing paradise Nauders is not only good for summer and wintersports but also for model-flying in a high-alpine surrounding. The easiest way to access the airfield is by the lift, it will take you up to 2200 m quickly. The airfield is just behind the mountain restaurant and will be the first challenge for the pilot. Experience and skilles are beneficial as it is not easy to fly here. You can only fly with northerly- or westerly winds. The restaurant boss will be happy to advice you with his local knowledge and tips (ask for Tommy). A shuttle service can be provided by the lift operator (advance reservation is needed) to get to the upper station of the Zirmlift. Flying here is possible with all winds except coming from the east. In 2600m a stunning panoramic view while flying will be the reward for coming up there. The rock-free landing area should not be of any problem for the pilots. The mountain restaurant with its playground and the new "Goldwasser" adventure world close by are perfect to make this a family-day out.
IMPORTANT CURRENT INFORMATION
As a German citizen and guest in Austria, the use of a model aircraft requires the "EU-Open with A1/A3 competency certificate" (to be obtained from the German LBA). Additionally, attaching the e-ID of the German registration to the model is mandatory.
In Austria, then, flying in the "hangar" (indoors) according to EU-Open criteria with A1/A3 competency certificate is possible under the following conditions:
- 120m above the pilot up to 10kg
- 120m above ground up to 25kg
International insurance and the marking (e-ID) of the model in accordance with the regulations are mandatory. The competency certificate must be carried.
Note: The competency certificate obtained from German associations is not valid in Austria!
